A useful temporary odorization proposal cannot be developed from the statement, "We need a portable odorizer."

Temporary odorization may involve equipment, project-data review, mobilization, site connections, startup, odorant inventory, operating coverage, downstream verification, contingency, demobilization and turnover records. Two projects with the same calendar duration can therefore have materially different scopes.

The objective of early planning is to define what the project requires, what each party will provide, which conditions remain unknown and how changes will be handled.

1. Operating Range and Gas Demand

Maximum design flow alone is not enough to define a temporary odorization project. The scope should address the complete operating range and the states the system will experience.

  • Startup and shutdown pattern

  • Flow ramps and transients

  • Source or gate changes

  • Reverse or changing flow direction

Low, intermittent or uncertain flow may require a different control, monitoring and verification approach than steady operation. A project with stable flow and a confirmed signal may be simpler to scope than one involving unpredictable demand, multiple gates or long zero-flow periods.

The proposal should disclose the operating conditions it covers and those it does not.

2. Odorant and Injection Basis

The proposal should identify the operator-approved odorization basis and how odorant will be supplied, monitored and replenished.

BPS normally supplies the odorant and manages inventory and refills for turnkey projects. Odorant usage should not be quoted from a generic assumption when the flow profile, injection basis or duration is uncertain.

Odorant concentration and perceived odor intensity should remain distinct. A chemical concentration result does not independently establish the gas-in-air level at which odor becomes readily detectable.

3. Site Connections and Readiness

Incomplete site information can delay deployment even when equipment is available. BPS temporary systems can support 1/2-inch through 2-inch NPT pipeline connections, subject to confirmed pressure, configuration and site requirements.

4. Flow Signal, Controls, Power and Communications

BPS temporary odorizers use onboard power, so external utility power is not normally required. Remote monitoring normally requires usable GSM or cellular service at the project location.

Cellular communications and the gas-flow input are separate project requirements. When proportional-to-flow control is required, the project team should confirm the source, engineering units, scaling and behavior of the gas-flow value.

A controller command does not independently prove physical odorant delivery. Inventory movement does not establish exactly when odorant entered the gas stream, and one downstream result does not represent every branch, source or operating state.

9. Redundancy and Contingency
