Natural Gas Pipeline Operations & Maintenance

Burgess Pipeline Services provides full operational support for natural gas distribution and transmission systems, including private systems operating in higher-risk environments such as active construction sites. We design and run a structured, PHMSA-style operating program covering routine inspections, pressure and odorization monitoring, damage prevention, emergency response, and recordkeeping, so your system runs safely without relying on informal, ad hoc decisions in the field.

Why a Structured Operating Program Matters

Natural gas systems that include underground piping, pressure-reducing stations, isolation valves, odorization equipment, and downstream loads carry real operational risk, especially in environments with heavy equipment, excavation, grading, or other construction activity nearby. That combination raises the likelihood of third-party damage or a line strike. A structured operating program gives the system owner a documented, deliberate framework instead of leaving daily decisions to informal judgment calls in the field.

What Our Operations and Maintenance Program Includes

Site-Specific Operating Plan

We start by reviewing your system's drawings and equipment information to build a practical operating plan specific to your layout, including a valve and regulator list, critical isolation points, documented normal operating pressures, and procedures for startup, normal operation, abnormal conditions, emergency shutdown, and restoration of service.

Routine Inspections and Monitoring

Once the system is operating, we provide routine inspections covering pressure-reducing stations, pressure readings, visible station piping and valves, odorization equipment operation, leak checks, and general conditions around underground gas facilities.

Damage Prevention and Construction Coordination

For systems operating near active construction, we coordinate with the site team before excavation near gas facilities, support utility markings, provide field observation during higher-risk work, perform leak checks after excavation near gas piping, and document any near misses, exposed pipe, damaged coating, damaged tracer wire, or contact with gas facilities.

Regulator and Pressure Control Monitoring

We monitor regulator stations for general condition, accessibility, inlet and outlet pressure, signs of damage, and abnormal operation, and can review or test regulator set points, lockup behavior, relief valve condition, and monitor regulator performance as part of a planned maintenance schedule.

Leak Surveys and System Patrols

We recommend and perform routine leak surveys and system patrols for the duration of system operation, with increased frequency during active excavation, after any known disturbance near gas piping, after pressure changes, and after startup or restart activities.

Emergency Response Planning

We support site-specific emergency response procedures covering gas odor complaints, suspected or confirmed leaks, line strikes, fires, overpressure events, loss of pressure, regulator failure, odorization issues, and emergency shutdown, including a clear line strike response procedure: make the area safe, control ignition sources, move personnel away from the release area, contact emergency responders when required, and isolate the system with qualified personnel.

Operator Qualification and Site Training

We recommend that personnel performing operation and maintenance tasks be qualified for the specific work they're doing, covering valve operation, regulator inspection, leak surveys, response to abnormal operating conditions, and service restoration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kinds of systems do you provide operations and maintenance support for?

We support both distribution and transmission natural gas systems, including private systems within active construction environments, systems with temporary CNG supply, and systems with mixed pipe materials such as HDPE alongside traditional steel.

Do you provide the operating personnel, or just the program design?

Both. We design the site-specific operating plan and documentation, and we can staff it with qualified operators under either coverage option above.
