Bio gas Odorization

Renewable natural gas interconnections can present odorization questions involving gas composition, flow variability, new or modified pipe, injection, and downstream verification. Burgess Pipeline Services can support project-specific review, temporary odorization, pipeline conditioning, field measurement, and documentation. No single service guarantees detectability at every point or replaces the operator's approved leak-response program.

Our Solution: Pipeline Pickling

What is Pipeline Pickling?

Pipeline Pickling means controlled odorization and pipeline conditioning intended to manage odorant uptake or fade in new or modified piping. It does not mean acid cleaning, chemical cleaning, flushing, or rinsing, and it does not guarantee a particular downstream result.

How does it work?

BPS reviews confirmed project data such as pipe material and condition, gas source, flow range, pressure, odorant basis, injection point, and proposed verification locations. A conditioning plan may use controlled odorant exposure and documented downstream checks. The responsible operator defines operating limits, acceptance criteria, regulatory applicability, and authorization to place the system in service.

How Pipeline Conditioning Supports an RNG Project:

  1. Structured Conditioning Plan: Pipeline Pickling can support a structured conditioning and verification plan at defined locations and operating conditions. Results apply to the sampled time, location, method, and configuration; they are not a guarantee of leak detection or prevention.

  2. Conditioning Objective: The conditioning objective is to manage odorant uptake and document stabilization against operator-approved criteria. Concentration and perceived odor intensity remain distinct measurements.

  3. Scope Boundary: Beyond addressing odor fade, Pipeline Pickling addresses odorization and pipeline-conditioning objectives; it is not a corrosion-removal, cleaning, integrity-restoration, or life-extension process.

  4. Project-Specific Scope: BPS reviews the confirmed pipeline material, RNG composition, operating conditions and project requirements before defining the field scope.

BPS Project Support

  • Field Support: BPS provides field odorization, conditioning, verification, and documentation support for confirmed scopes.

  • Scope-Appropriate Methods: Tools and methods are selected for the confirmed scope and described without implying proprietary equipment or software.

  • Operating Boundaries: Work should follow the operator's procedures, the current safety data sheet, manufacturer instructions, and site requirements. Pipeline Pickling supports an odorization plan but does not replace the operator's safety or regulatory program.

  • Coordination and Documentation: BPS coordinates the agreed field scope, operating records, verification activities and turnover documentation with the responsible operator.
