Spill Scenarios in Odorization Systems: Causes, Prevention, and Response

Odorant can escape from injection piping, fittings, storage, transfer connections, or damaged equipment. A strong odor may travel beyond the release area, and smell alone does not establish the source, concentration, or whether an area is safe. Follow the operator's emergency plan, the current product safety data sheet, and site-specific reporting and response procedures.
Injection System Spills: Causes and Prevention
Causes: Spills in injection systems can stem from loose fittings, equipment failures, or line breakage.
Preventive Measures: Use compatible containment, components, connection controls, inspection, and test methods selected for the odorant, equipment, pressure, site, and applicable requirements. Steel is not a universal containment material, and pressure testing should follow the approved procedure and equipment limits.
Prevention: Plan transfer connections, isolation, compatible containment, access control, communications, and stop-work criteria for the confirmed product and site.
Preparedness: A spill kit alone is not a response plan. Define trained responders, notifications, exclusion zones, protective equipment, containment and recovery materials, and disposal responsibilities using the current safety data sheet and operator procedures.
Prevention and response should be documented for the specific odorant, equipment, transfer method, site, and responsible parties.
