Pipeline Conditioning Techniques for Odorization Performance

Pipeline conditioning in natural gas odorization is not about improving flow by removing blockages. It is about preparing the pipeline to carry odorant reliably. New pipe, modified pipe, or long-isolated pipe can absorb mercaptan odorant during startup, which creates low downstream readings even when the odorizer is operating correctly.

Technique 1: Static conditioning

Static conditioning is used when a pipeline section can be isolated. Odorized gas or odorant is introduced and held for a defined dwell period so the pipe wall can absorb odorant before the line is placed into normal service.

Technique 2: Dynamic conditioning

Dynamic conditioning is used when flow is available. Odorant is injected upstream while gas moves through the pipe, and downstream readings are monitored until odorant breakthrough and stable concentration are confirmed.

Technique 3: Downstream verification

Conditioning is not complete just because odorant was injected. It is complete when downstream sample points show that odorant remains detectable and stable under the project’s operating conditions.

Technique 4: Documentation and trend review

Useful conditioning records include injection rate, flow, pressure, dwell time or run time, sample locations, sample timing, and final downstream readings. Those records help operators confirm startup readiness and troubleshoot future odor fade issues.

The best conditioning technique is the one that proves the line can carry odorant where it needs to go. For BPS projects, conditioning is part of odorization control, commissioning support, and odor fade prevention.
