For natural gas odorization work, release modeling can support planning when the chemical, source term, weather, terrain, and model limitations are defined. Tools such as MARPLOT and ALOHA can help visualize selected scenarios, but they do not establish actual field concentrations, safe distances, or compliance by themselves. This article explains their planning role and limits.


What are MARPLOT and ALOHA?

MARPLOT (Mapping Application for Response, Planning, and Local Operational Tasks) is a mapping program that allows users to create, view, and modify maps. It is part of the CAMEO software suite, which is designed to assist emergency planners and responders in dealing with chemical emergencies.

ALOHA (Areal Locations of Hazardous Atmospheres) is an atmospheric dispersion model used to predict the movement and concentration of hazardous chemical vapors. It is also part of the CAMEO suite and is widely used for evaluating releases of toxic gas clouds, fires, and explosions.


How MARPLOT and ALOHA Work Together

When dealing with odorant releases, MARPLOT and ALOHA can be used in tandem to provide a comprehensive mapping and analysis solution:

  1. Data Input: Begin by entering the details of the odorant release into ALOHA. This includes information about the chemical properties, release rate, and environmental conditions.

  2. Dispersion Modeling: ALOHA uses this data to model the dispersion of the odorant in the atmosphere, predicting the concentration levels at various distances from the release point.

  3. Mapping: The results from ALOHA can then be exported to MARPLOT. This can help visualize the modeled scenario on a map; the output remains dependent on inputs and model applicability.
