Burgess Pipeline Services: Expert Odorant Cylinder Handling & Safety Guide

Safe and Efficient Odorant Transfer Procedure

At Burgess Pipeline Services, we prioritize safety, efficiency, and compliance when handling odorant cylinders. Proper connection and disconnection procedures ensure smooth operations while minimizing risks. Below is a step-by-step guide to safely manage odorant cylinders in your pipeline operations.

Odorant Transfer Procedure

Connecting an Odorant Cylinder

Step 1: Inspection & Preparation

  1. Inspect the cylinder for damage upon receipt.

  2. Open the lid (57 & 120 Gal cylinders only).

  3. Ensure all valves are closed before proceeding.

  4. Check the liquid valve seal—if broken, contact technical assistance.

Step 2: Removing Shipping Plugs

  1. Slowly remove shipping plugs to check for pressure.

    • Safety Tip: Wear PPE (goggles, chemical gloves, hard hat)—refer to the Odor-Tech Safety Data Sheet.

    • Save plugs for cylinder return.

Step 3: Hose & Fitting Installation

  1. Use recommended hoses & fittings

    • Liquid & Vapor Hoses

    • Quick Connect Fittings

  2. Install male quick connect fittings with Teflon tape.

  3. Attach hoses to the ‘Vapor’ and ‘Liquid’ valves.

Step 4: Pressurization & Leak Check

  1. Connect the liquid valve to the discharge point (keep closed).

  2. Pressurize with inert gas via the vapor hose.

  3. Check for leaks.

  4. Ensure receiving vessel pressure is lower than the cylinder’s pressure.

Step 5: Discharging Odorant

  1. Open the liquid valve to transfer odorant.

  2. Critical Reminder: Never exceed 85% filling rate

Disconnecting an Odorant Cylinder

Step 1: Emptying & Purging

  1. Return cylinders empty—close the vapor valve once drained.

  2. Purge liquid hose by allowing vapor to blow through.

  3. Close the liquid valve after purging.

Step 2: Safe Hose Removal & Cleaning

  1. Remove hoses carefully—wear PPE (goggles, gloves, hard hat).

  2. Neutralize odor.

  3. Depressurize the cylinder to atmospheric pressure.

Step 3: Preparing for Return

  1. Remove quick connect fittings.

  2. Reinstall shipping plugs with Teflon tape.

  3. Verify DOT shipping labels are intact.
